Our Curriculum Overview
Vision and Ethos
At All Saints Church School, we have designed a creative and bespoke curriculum that reflects our vision and supports all children to become independent, confident learners.
Our curriculum is grounded in the National Curriculum, which sets out the programmes of study and attainment targets for all subjects across the key stages.
As part of the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust, our curriculum is shaped by a shared set of core principles, while remaining unique to our school community. The Trust promotes:
-
Educational and aspirational values
-
Moral and Christian values
-
Collaborative values
In addition, the Trust’s Education Strategy ensures that every child benefits from:
-
Effective leadership, insight and impact
-
Readiness for learning: present, positive and prepared
-
Nurturing beginnings that ignite curiosity
-
An aspirational curriculum that inspires ambition
-
Excellence in teaching that empowers learners
-
Inclusion and diversity, with the highest aspirations for every child
-
A strong focus on wellbeing
-
Flourishing relationships between schools, families and communities
Our curriculum is underpinned by a strong Christian vision which threads through all aspects of school life:
“All things are possible if you believe.” (Mark 9:23)
At All Saints, we provide a caring and supportive learning environment, combined with high expectations and appropriate challenge, enabling every child to achieve their full and unique potential. We recognise that children have different strengths, interests and needs, and we respond to these to support effective learning.
Our vision promotes a growth mindset, encouraging children to approach learning with resilience, perseverance and confidence. We believe that every child is capable of success and encourage them to overcome challenges through effort and belief.
Ultimately, our curriculum aims to ensure that all children fulfil their potential and develop into well-rounded, respectful and responsible members of the community.
Intent
Our curriculum intent is to ensure that all children develop secure knowledge and the ability to apply key skills effectively as learners. Through carefully planned sequences of learning, pupils are supported to become curious, resilient, problem-solving, collaborative and creative individuals who develop a love of learning and strive to achieve their full potential.
At All Saints, we are committed to providing a knowledge-rich curriculum that is carefully sequenced to build deep understanding over time, rather than simply covering content (Christodoulou, 2014). Learning is structured through well-planned sequences of enquiry-based questions that build on prior knowledge, ensuring clarity about what is taught and why.
Wherever possible, learning is enriched through meaningful and engaging cross-curricular links, enabling children to make connections and see purpose in their learning.
Implementation
Our curriculum is implemented through a carefully designed, bespoke approach that develops confident, disciplined and enquiring learners who are able to make informed decisions. Teachers bring the curriculum to life through high-quality teaching, ensuring that all pupils can access learning through well-scaffolded support and adaptive practice.
Our teaching is informed by research into how children learn and retain knowledge, with a strong focus on cognitive science, including retrieval practice, well-structured learning and the effective management of cognitive load (Willingham, 2009).
Teaching across the school is underpinned by six key principles:
-
Activate prior learning
Teachers plan tasks that connect new learning to prior knowledge, strengthening understanding and retention.
-
Explain and model in small steps
Complex concepts are broken down into clear, manageable steps so that all pupils can understand and succeed.
-
Use effective questioning
Questioning is used to engage pupils, check understanding and identify misconceptions, while promoting curiosity and dialogue.
-
Adapt practice and provide scaffolding
Teaching is responsive to pupils’ needs, with appropriate support provided and gradually reduced to foster independence.
-
Provide time for practice
Pupils are given opportunities for independent, reflective and deliberate practice to consolidate and deepen learning.
-
Provide feedback and address misconceptions
Timely and purposeful feedback supports pupils in improving their understanding, building confidence and making progress.
Our curriculum is structured through clear progression across all subjects. Staff have developed a curriculum map that identifies the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be taught, with carefully sequenced learning that is revisited and built upon over time. This ensures that pupils develop secure foundations and are able to apply their knowledge in different contexts as they move through the school.
Teachers explicitly support pupils in making connections between their learning, helping them to build a well-organised body of knowledge in their long-term memory.
Our curriculum is further enriched through the inclusion of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and outdoor learning, which are woven throughout subjects to promote curiosity, creativity and a love of learning.

We also place strong emphasis on pupils’ social, emotional and moral development, providing opportunities for children to develop self-motivation, self-esteem and positive relationships within the school community.
In addition, the curriculum supports pupils’ physical development and encourages responsibility for their own health and wellbeing.
Through carefully planned learning experiences, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities needed to make a positive contribution to society.
Impact
The impact of our curriculum is that pupils leave All Saints as enthusiastic learners who are confident to take risks, explore new ideas and learn independently. They develop a broad and deep understanding of knowledge, alongside the skills and attitudes needed for lifelong learning.
Our curriculum ensures equal access for all pupils, with high expectations, appropriate challenge and effective support, enabling every child to achieve their full potential.
We evaluate the effectiveness of our curriculum through ongoing formative assessment. We recognise that a true understanding of pupils’ progress goes beyond summative testing and requires responsive teaching and continuous diagnostic assessment (Wiliam, 2011). Assessment is used to inform teaching, ensuring that learning is adapted to meet pupils’ needs.
Gaps in knowledge and vocabulary are identified promptly and addressed through carefully planned subsequent learning. High-quality feedback plays a key role in supporting pupils to refine their understanding, build confidence and make sustained progress.
