Class 2

January 2025     Dear Class 2 Parents and carers,

Wishing you all a Happy New Year for 2025! The class 2 team hope that you had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed the time together.

This term is already busy, and we have lots of very exciting things planned in class 2, our brief plans are listed below so that you have an outline of what we are planning to learn.

From A to B

English

In English, we will be looking at a variety of texts, as well as the way to include all the non-negotiables of writing such as capitals, full stops, punctuation, connectives, adjectives and other grammar elements.

Our texts will include:

  • The sun and the wind – a traditional tale

  • Icarus – a myth

  • Beegu –a fiction text

  • Space – non-fiction, information text

Maths

Maths will focus on the four main operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will be looking at using our written methods and applying them to solve word-based challenges.

Science, DT and STEAM

Our lessons in science will focus on materials and the following investigations:

  • To investigate which papers are the most absorbent

  • Which building materials are absorbent?

  • How can we make fabrics waterproof?

  • Learn about the waterproof properties of wax

  • Talk about how some materials change shape when they are heated up.

  • Which ball is the bounciest?

  • Which fabric is the stretchiest?

History

History will focus on the development of flight through time –focusing on the Wright Brothers and their story

Geography

Our lessons in Geography will look at what happens at train stations and airports. This will focus on travel and ways we can explore the world.

Art

This term we have two units of study – we begin  looking at being an architect. Children will explore architecture and create architectural models.

After half term we will spend time exploring how painters use paint in expressive and gestural ways. We will explore colour mixing and experimental mark making to create abstract still lifes.

RE

The main questions that we will be focusing on in RE is What do Christians believe God is like? We will look at parables and the meaning behind the story within them.

PSHE

This term we look at ways to keep safe, what it means to keep safe, how we keep safe in different situations.

We then move onto a unit of work about rights and respects. In this unit we will think about getting on with others, feeling safe and looking after our environment.

Computing

Computing will focus on data handling using the International Space Station. The International Space Station (ISS) is a fascinating real-world setting for teaching how data is collected, used and displayed as well as the scientific learning of the conditions needed for plants and animals, including humans, to survive.

Music

Our music lessons will be spent composing music on the theme of space. We will learn to recognise differences in dynamics, different instruments and use appropriate musical vocabulary.

PE

There will be two key areas this term in PE:

Space dance

FItness

PE will take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays – please ensure your child always has a PE kit in school and a hair band to tie up any long hair.

A few quick reminders about class 2:

  • PE will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays; however, we would advise having PE kits in all week.

  • Homework will be set on a Friday and is due in the following Wednesday

  • If you are able to keep a spare pair of wellies in school, it means that we are able to have impromptu sessions in the Forest Area.

Finally, please remember our door is always open if ever you have any concerns or questions. Looking forward to a fun and enjoyable term working with your children,

Best wishes,

Mrs Smith and Miss Daniel
