Modern Foreign Languages

Learning a modern foreign language ensures every child at All Saints has a real opportunity to learn a foreign language.  Learning a modern foreign language offers valuable life and social skills which enhances language skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing.

At All Saints, we teach French as it is a widely spoken language throughout the world, also giving pupils a deeper understanding of the etymology of English words which have derived from French. By learning a foreign language, children gain the foundation to grow into skilled linguists in the future, allowing them greater opportunities in the world of work. Moreover, children gain more than learning a new vocabulary; the skill of learning and speaking a different language builds confidence and resilience.

We use the Language Angels scheme of work and resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages' curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes.

At All Saints, we enrich our French studies with school-wide celebration days and classroom activities such as Fancy French Days, French shopping and French catwalks. considering how French can be thought about in the curriculum such as science and Design and Technology where children can build the Eiffel Tower. We celebrate the wider community with Europe Day and classes choosing a country participating in the Eurovision Song Contest to discover more about the countries, their culture, language and traditions.

How do we teach French at All Saints?

Our approach to teaching modern foreign languages reflects our vision and is underpinned by high-quality practice. We use Language Angels to ensure learning is carefully sequenced, builds on prior knowledge and supports long-term understanding. The scheme provides an engaging, fun and interactive platform with colourful visuals, catchy songs and games that make language learning exciting.

Language Angels is an inclusive learning platform, supporting mixed-ability, including pupils with SEND, ensuring all students can benefit from learning a language. The lessons are designed to build real-world knowledge step by step, ensuring children learn the language in a clear and coherent manner.

Our curriculum road map shows the progression of French topics as children move though the school.

 EXTRA-CURRICULAR

To enhance our language learning curriculum, we provide extracurricular experiences and opportunities for our children.  Currently, we run a Chinese culture after-school club.
