We aim to provide a music curriculum that inspires a lifelong love of music through listening, performing, composing and appraising. 

We encourage children to explore their creativity, develop confidence in expressing themselves and gain an appreciation of music from different cultures, genres and periods of history. 

Through carefully planned experiences, our children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to become confident musicians. They learn to perform with increasing accuracy and expression, compose and improvise creatively, listen critically and respond thoughtfully to a wide range of music. 

How do we teach Music at All Saints?                                

Our approach to teaching music reflects our vision and is underpinned by high-quality, research-informed practice. We use the Get Set 4 Education Music curriculum to ensure learning is carefully sequenced, builds progressively on prior knowledge and supports long-term musical development. 

Music learning is organised through three interconnected strands: 

• Listening and Appraising 
• Performing 
• Composing and Improvising 

These strands are carefully sequenced so that children continually revisit and build upon previous learning as they progress through school. 

We teach musical vocabulary explicitly and revisit key terms regularly to deepen understanding and support children in discussing and evaluating music with confidence. From EYFS to Year 6, children develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of musical concepts such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture and structure. 

A key principle of the Get Set 4 Education curriculum is progression. Children begin by exploring sounds, rhythms and songs in the Early Years before developing their understanding of notation, composition, ensemble performance and musical styles throughout Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. As knowledge and skills are revisited and extended, children develop greater confidence, fluency and musicality. 

Teachers build upon pupils’ prior knowledge, break learning into manageable steps and adapt teaching to meet the needs of all learners. Through modelling, discussion, rehearsal and performance opportunities, children are supported to achieve success and develop a sense of accomplishment. 

Music lessons provide opportunities for children to sing, play instruments, compose, improvise and perform both individually and collaboratively. Children learn how to listen carefully, evaluate their own work and that of others, and refine their musical ideas through practice and reflection. 

At All Saints, we enhance our music curriculum through our use of Sing Up, a nationally recognised programme that supports high-quality singing and music-making across the school. Sing Up provides engaging songs, teaching resources and expert guidance that help children develop their singing skills, musical understanding and confidence as performers. 

                                

We use Sing Up to enrich classroom learning, support curriculum topics, enhance collective worship and assemblies, and provide repertoire for our school choir.  

Through regular singing opportunities, children learn to sing with increasing accuracy, expression and enjoyment while developing important musical skills such as pitch, rhythm, pulse and performance awareness. 

Sing Up's mission aligns closely with our own vision for music: ensuring that every child has the opportunity to experience the joy of singing, develop their musical potential and benefit from the positive impact that music can have on confidence, wellbeing, communication and personal development. 

EYFS 

Young children are naturally musical and enjoy exploring sounds through singing, movement and play. At All Saints, we provide rich musical experiences that nurture children's creativity, curiosity and confidence. Through songs, rhymes, instruments and listening activities, children develop an early understanding of pulse, rhythm, pitch and dynamics while learning to express themselves through music. 

We seek to foster enjoyment, participation and a love of music that provides strong foundations for future musical learning. 

Progression and Musical Development 

Our Music skills of progression documents demonstrate how knowledge and skills develop across the school in Listening, Performing and Composing. 

Children progress from exploring sounds and simple rhythms in EYFS and Key Stage One to performing with increasing technical control, composing more complex musical ideas and developing an understanding of musical traditions, genres and historical periods in Key Stage Two. 

Alongside this, our Music Vocabulary Pyramid ensures that children continually build and revisit key musical terminology, enabling them to discuss, evaluate and create music with growing confidence and accuracy.

Our music curriculum supports these values by encouraging children to listen respectfully, collaborate effectively and perform with confidence and resilience. Through shared musical experiences, children learn the importance of teamwork, perseverance and mutual respect. 

By providing inspiring musical opportunities, we aim to develop confident, creative and enthusiastic learners who will continue to appreciate and engage with music throughout their lives. 

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

To enrich our music curriculum, we provide a range of opportunities for children to participate in musical activities beyond the classroom. These include;  

Individual and small group music lessons with peripatetic teachers.  

Choir club, singing performances, Instrumental concerts, celebrations, collective worship, visiting musicians, professional teaching with Armonico Consort  and wider performance opportunities within the local and national community. 

These experiences help children develop confidence, showcase their talents and experience the joy of making music together.

Our Music Ambassadors are passionate about promoting a love of music across the school. They support concerts, talent shows and musical events throughout the year, share music during Friday playtimes and help celebrate composers and musicians, inspiring others to enjoy music and performance.
